Who was the Lady In Black? What was her reason for coming to the Valentino crypt? These are the most frequently asked questions. While there were several would-be Ladies In Black scattered over the 80 + years since Valentino's death, there was only one original Lady In Black. The Mysterious Lady In Black title was given by the press in the early 1930's. No one knew who she was or why she was doing her annual pilgrimage and placement of flowers. After her name was revealed in 1941, the press dropped the "mysterious" from her title and from then on she was just known as the Lady In Black. Several of the ladies remain unknown as they attended only once or twice then never again, and at no time did they reveal their identity.
